India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka advance directly to Asian Games 2026 knockouts

New Delhi: The men’s cricket teams of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have directly advanced to the knockout stages of the in September, while Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal and Oman will compete in the opening round to join them.

The groups and draws of the continental event were announced on Thursday for both the men’s and the women’s events. The men’s edition will feature ten teams, while eight teams will compete in the women’s edition.

The women’s tournament will begin with the quarter-final matches between India and Japan, Bangladesh and China, Sri Lanka and Malaysia and Pakistan and Thailand. The competition will start on September 17 and conclude on September 22.

The men’s edition will run from September 24 to October 1. Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal are placed in Group A and Hong Kong, Malaysia and Oman are in Group B of the first round. The top two teams from both groups will qualify for the knockouts to face the direct qualifiers.

All matches will be played in Nagoya, Japan and in the T20 format. Indian team has won the gold medal for both men and women in the 2023 Games. The final of the men’s edition was washed out after Afghanistan played 18.2 overs. The Indian team, by virtue of being the higher-seeded team, were awarded the gold medal. In the women’s event, India defeated Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final.
