IMD predicts thunderstorms for parts of Maharashtra; Mumbai and Thane to stay hot and humid

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert predicting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and light to moderate rainfall across parts of Maharashtra over the next few days. In a nowcast bulletin, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) flagged that isolated pockets of South Konkan-Goa and South Madhya Maharashtra could see wind speeds hitting 40 to 50 kmph alongside active thunderstorm spells.

While interior and southern coastal belts prepare for wet conditions, Mumbai and neighboring Thane are set to experience dry, sweltering weather over the weekend. IMD officials noted that isolated areas across the wider Konkan-Goa coastal stretch will continue to witness elevated humidity and high daytime temperatures. The weather across the Mumbai metropolitan area will stay largely dry on Saturday and Sunday (17 and 18 October), with isolated showers or light thundershowers likely around Tuesday, 20 October.

Wet spell ahead for Konkan belt and western districts

Showers, thunderstorms, and brisk winds are predicted to pick up in coastal belts like Raigad and Ratnagiri, with neighbouring Sindhudurg expected to see active spells stretch from the weekend well into early next week.

Further inland, Pune and surrounding ghat areas are likely to witness light showers and isolated thundershowers continuing through Monday, 19 October. Similar weather conditions- featuring lightning, gusty winds, and moderate rainfall are forecast for Kolhapur, Satara, and Sangli. In contrast, northern Maharashtra districts including Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon will remain largely dry.

IMD safety advisory for citizens and farmers

Meteorological officials have urged residents in storm-affected belts to take standard safety precautions. People are advised to stay indoors during active lightning, avoid taking shelter beneath tall trees, and steer clear of open water bodies. Residents should also disconnect delicate electrical items during intense activity.

The advisory also issued clear guidance for the farming community. Farmers have been asked to quickly harvest mature crops, shift grain stocks to moisture-proof storage, and securely stake young saplings against strong gusts. Livestock should be kept inside safe, covered shelters as weather patterns shift across the region.
