‘Haven’t received any answer’: Ex-India spinner accuses Virat Kohli of ghosting him after non-selection

New Delhi: Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has accused of ghosting him and breaking a promise as he opened up on his non-selection in the Indian team after an injury in 2017. Mishra played his last game for India in a T20I against England in Bengaluru in February 2017 and never returned to the side again.

He injured his leg in the game against England and failed to make a comeback into the Indian team after recovering from his injury. Mishra opened up about the incident during his latest appearance on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube show Baith & Bol.

Mishra, who injured his leg in his last game for India, recalled that then head coach Anil Kumble had assured him that he would return to the side once he was fit. He claimed Kohli, who was leading India across formats back then, also gave him similar assurance.

“I also asked Virat Kohli, I said, ‘Brother, what needs to be done?’ He said, ‘You don’t worry. Get fully fit and comfortable, and you are there [in the team],’” Mishra said on the show.

However, Mishra claimed that things changed once he recovered from his injury and was looking to get back into the Indian team. The former leg spinner claimed he contacted Kohli to ask about his chances to return to the team and was told by the former India captain that he would get an update from him in 7-10 days.

However, as per Mishra, Kohli never provided an update to him on his non-selection. Mishra claimed Kohli ghosted him, ignoring his calls and messages when he tried to contact the Team India star.

“So he said, ‘I will let you know in a week to ten days.’ Then, brother, one week passed, two weeks passed, three weeks passed; there was absolutely no update from him. I called him… he did not pick up the call. I messaged him, but there was no reply,” Mishra said.

The ex-India leg spinner claimed that he tried calling Kohli several times for an answer but stopped eventually after not getting a response from his side. Mishra also questioned how other players who suffered more serious injuries and spent longer time on the sidelines were brought back into the side faster than him.

“When players who got more severely injured than you, and were injured for much longer, made their comebacks… yet, I have never received any answer to this day,” said the former India spinner.

The T20I against England in Bengaluru eventually proved to be Mishra’s last for the Indian team. He played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is for India, picking up 156 wickets in all three formats combined.

Amit Mishra appointed DC’s spin-bowling coach

Mishra, who has retired from all forms of the game, was recently appointed as the spin-bowling coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027. He will work alongside the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Chaminda Vaas, who are part of DC’s coaching staff for the new season.
