Gorakhpur shock: Husband attacks wife with sickle during dispute; condition critical

New Delhi: A 40-year-old woman was left critically injured after her husband attacked her with a sickle following a domestic dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district. The accused identified as Jalaluddin alias Pangul, was arrested on Monday, police said.

The incident took place around 5 pm on Sunday in Haraiya village, under the Gida police station area. According to the police, the 45-year-old man allegedly attacked his wife, Safia, during an argument.

Safia suffered serious injuries to her abdomen, head and neck. She was rushed to BRD Medical College for treatment, where her condition remained critical, officials said.

What led to attack?

According to preliminary police findings, Jalaluddin suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship. This suspicion had reportedly led to frequent arguments between the couple.

Residents rushed to the spot after hearing Safia’s cries for help. They informed the police and helped take her to the hospital for treatment. The couple have seven children and their eldest daughter, Rehnuma, filed a complaint alleging that her father frequently assaulted her mother.

Police register attempt to murder case

Following the complaint, police registered a FIR against the accused under charges including attempt to murder.

Circle Officer (GIDA) Abha Singh said the accused had been arrested and was being questioned. Further legal proceedings are underway. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations of repeated domestic violence made by the couple’s daughter.

Safia continues to receive treatment at BRD Medical College, with doctors monitoring her condition following the serious injuries sustained in the alleged attack.
