Google Pay gets Gemini money assistant and new SBI credit card in India

New Delhi: Google has added a Gemini-based conversational assistant to Google Pay in India, giving users a new way to check spending, understand financial terms and receive money-management suggestions inside the payments app. The feature, called Ask Google Pay, is available as an opt-in experience from Wednesday, July 29.

The company has also expanded its credit offering through the Google Pay Flex SBI Card, developed with SBI Card. The two launches move Google Pay beyond UPI transactions and deeper into personal finance information, credit and spending analysis.

What is Ask Google Pay?

Ask Google Pay works like a chatbot inside the app. Users can type or speak questions about their spending and receive answers based on transaction history and credit report data available with Google Pay.

A user could ask how much was spent on food last month, where costs have increased or how a credit score works. It can also explain topics such as systematic investment plans, compound interest and differences between tax regimes.

The feature supports 10 Indian languages. Google said the information is meant for educational use and should not be treated as professional financial advice.

Since the assistant uses personal financial information, users will need to actively opt in. The usefulness of its answers will depend on how complete the transaction and credit data inside Google Pay is.

What does the Google Pay Flex SBI Card offer?

The new card can be applied for directly through the Google Pay app without physical paperwork. Google said cards will be offered on the RuPay and Visa payment networks.

RuPay support allows eligible users to make credit card payments through UPI at supported merchants. The card also uses a rewards system called Stars, where one Star carries a redemption value of ₹1.

Cardholders can convert their latest outstanding bill into equated monthly instalments. Interest rates, fees, eligibility and repayment terms will remain key details for customers to check before applying.

Google adds AI and Pixel benefits

Google said Flex customers will later become eligible for a 50 per cent discount on a Google AI Plus plan for one year. The offer includes selected cloud storage plans, including 400GB and 2TB options.

Card users are also expected to receive extra Stars on eligible purchases and discounts across Google Pixel smartphones. Exact terms and exclusions may differ by customer and offer period.

Ask Google Pay reflects a wider move by payment apps to turn transaction records into personal finance tools. For users, the new feature could make everyday spending easier to read. Its recommendations still need a careful look, particularly where credit cards, investments or tax choices are involved.
