From Subramaniapuram fame to driving an auto: Marimuthu’s struggle to survive without films

New Delhi: A memorable appearance in a cult Tamil film did not translate into a steady acting career for Marimuthu. The actor, who featured in M Sasikumar’s 2008 hit Subramaniapuram, eventually had to return to regular work after struggling to find enough opportunities in cinema.

Today, his journey is being remembered for the sheer number of jobs he took up to make ends meet, including repairing electrical and radio equipment and driving an autorickshaw.

Marimuthu’s difficult start in life

Long before his entry into films, Marimuthu had already faced considerable hardship. Born in Madurai, he reportedly lost both his parents at a young age and could study only until Class 3.

With no financial security to fall back on, he began working early. His jobs included repairing lights and microphone equipment. He later moved to Chennai with hopes of finding a foothold in the Tamil film industry.

Cinema eventually came calling in an unexpected manner. While he was working, members of a film crew reportedly photographed him. Days later, he was asked to audition for Subramaniapuram.

Subramaniapuram gave him a big-screen break

Released in 2008, Subramaniapuram went on to attain cult status for its realistic storytelling, performances and music. Sasikumar, Jai, Samuthirakani, Swathi, Ganja Karuppu and Super Good Subramani were among the film’s cast.

Marimuthu also featured in the film and attracted attention with his performance. The opportunity appeared to offer him a route towards a more secure career in cinema after years of struggle.

However, the expected stream of acting offers did not follow.

Acting opportunities dried up

As work became scarce, Marimuthu returned to jobs outside the film industry instead of waiting indefinitely for another role. He worked at a radio repair shop and took up other technical work to support himself and his family.

Financial pressure eventually led him to repair and drive an autorickshaw. Videos of the actor working with his auto later surfaced online and drew attention on social media.

For many viewers, seeing someone associated with a celebrated Tamil film return to everyday work highlighted how uncertain an acting career can be, even after appearing in a successful movie.

Marimuthu still hopes to act again

Despite the setbacks, he has not abandoned his ambition to return to cinema. Marimuthu is married to Karthika, whom he reportedly met during his early working years.

The actor has also expressed hope of getting another significant opportunity, including the possibility of appearing in Subramaniapuram 2.

His journey from a small role in a cult classic to taking up whatever work was available for survival reflects a less glamorous side of the film industry, where one successful appearance does not necessarily guarantee a lasting career.
