Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly receives death threat, files police complaint

New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has filed a police complaint in Kolkata after receiving multiple threatening letters over the last few months. Ganguly filed the complaint after the latest letter warned of killing him and his wife, Dona.

As per news agency PTI, Ganguly went to the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata on Monday after receiving the latest letter at his office. The former BCCI president, who is currently serving as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), registered an official complaint in the matter.

“We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source and the courier trail to identify the person responsible,” a senior officer at the Thakurpukur police station was quoted as saying by PTI.

The complaint was registered by the former India captain after two letters arrived at his office on Monday, containing explicit threats to kill Ganguly and his wife Dona. The letter also warned that the former cricketer’s family members can be harmed. As per PTI, such letters have been arriving in Ganguly’s name for the past six months.

The former India captain and his family didn’t take the threats seriously in the beginning but decided to register a police complaint after receiving death threats continuously. The police have launched an investigation into the matter and are trying to establish the identity and the motive of the sender.

Police trying to examine if same person sent the letters

The Kolkata police is examining the content of the letter and is trying to determine if the same person is behind all the letters that have been sent to Ganguly. As per preliminary investigation, the letters have been sent by a person from Belgharia in North 24 Parganas district of Kolkata.

The letters have reportedly been sent through a courier service, and the police is trying to track down the sender by speaking to the courier agency. “We have spoken to the people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to spot it,” a police official was quoted as saying by PTI.
