End of an era: EA shuts down BioWare, cancels Mass Effect and cuts 400 jobs

Electronic Arts (EA) is shutting down BioWare, the legendary Canadian game developer behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and the original Baldur’s Gate games. The announcement came on October 21, 2026, ending more than three decades of game development. EA is cutting around 400 jobs, including roughly 50 positions at BioWare, according to Bloomberg. The publisher has cancelled the next Mass Effect game, which was still in early development.

For gamers who grew up playing Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Mass Effect, the closure marks the end of an important chapter in gaming history. BioWare built its reputation on story-driven role-playing games where players could make decisions that changed the story, their relationships and sometimes the fate of entire worlds. In a statement confirming the closure, BioWare said, “There is nothing easy about writing those words.”

Why is EA shutting down BioWare?

EA is restructuring its business following its $55 billion acquisition by an investor group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. The deal closed in August 2026.

In an internal communication, EA executives David Tinson and Cam Weber said the company had taken a “hard look at our business” and decided to concentrate its resources on fewer projects.

BioWare’s recent games struggled commercially. Anthem, released in 2019, failed to attract a lasting audience. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024, subsequently missed EA’s sales expectations.

The publisher is now directing investment into franchises including Battlefield, EA Sports FC, Apex Legends and upcoming Star Wars Jedi projects.

What happens to the next Mass Effect game?

The next Mass Effect title has been cancelled. BioWare confirmed that development had ended, disappointing fans who had been waiting for the series to return.

EA has not announced plans to transfer the project to another studio.

What happened to the studio behind Baldur’s Gate?

BioWare was founded in Canada in 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip.

The studio developed the original Baldur’s Gate in 1998 and Baldur’s Gate II in 2000, helping establish the franchise as a major name in PC role-playing games.

The hugely successful Baldur’s Gate 3, released in 2023, was developed by Larian Studios and is separate from BioWare’s closure.

BioWare later created Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

What happens to the 400 affected employees?

According to Bloomberg, EA is eliminating approximately 3 per cent of its workforce, with around 50 affected employees coming from BioWare.

EA says it will help affected workers explore other opportunities within the company.

Other restructuring measures include changes to the development team behind skate. and the cancellation of a planned The Sims project.

As far as BioWare fans are concerned, the closure is particularly painful. The studio helped define how modern role-playing games tell stories, and its influence remains visible across the gaming industry.
