ED seizes 2 aircraft, 6 land parcels in Rs 510-crore asset crackdown on Anil Ambani Group

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth Rs 510.17 crore linked to companies owned by industrialist Anil Ambani in connection with alleged bank fraud cases involving Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL), Reliance Commercial Finance Limited (RCFL) and Reliance Communications Limited (RCom).

The latest action includes two chartered aircraft, six land parcels and an office premises in Maharashtra. The agency has also attached two windmills in Tamil Nadu and bank deposits in the RHFL and RCFL case.

With this action, the total value of assets attached in investigations involving the Reliance Anil Ambani Group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) has reached Rs 23,100 crore.

ED’s action in two bank fraud cases

According to the agency, assets worth Rs 263.05 crore have been attached in the Reliance Home Finance Limited and Reliance Commercial Finance Limited bank fraud case. Another Rs 247.12 crore worth of assets have been attached in the Reliance Communications bank fraud case.

The ED began its investigations based on multiple cases registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi, along with the Economic Offences Wings of the Delhi and Mumbai Police.

The agency has also examined two cases under FEMA. The companies under investigation include Reliance Communications, Reliance Home Finance, Reliance Commercial Finance, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Power and Reliance Capital.

The ED has alleged that the Reliance Anil Ambani Group was involved in siphoning off public funds from banks and financial institutions, diverting money to offshore tax havens and misusing insolvency laws to protect corporate assets for personal benefit.

“A large part was utilised for the individual benefit of the promoters and their family,” it alleged.

10 arrests, seven complaints filed

The agency said 10 people have been arrested in connection with these cases. It has also filed six complaints under the PMLA and one under FEMA.

The latest action comes amid several investigations into companies associated with Anil Ambani. In August, the CBI registered an FIR against Reliance Capital Limited and its former chairman over an alleged fraud that caused a loss of Rs 1,816.22 crore to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

Ambani has denied any wrongdoing in the matter. His spokesperson said the FIR relates to Reliance Capital, where Ambani served as a non-executive director and chairman from 2005 until November 2021.

The spokesperson added that the Reserve Bank of India had superseded Reliance Capital’s board in November 2021 and appointed an administrator. Ambani has denied any wrongdoing in the case and said he reserves all rights available to him under the law.
