Eclatant Films seeks Rs 29.67 cr from Ram Gopal Varma, tells producers, OTT platforms to stay away

New Delhi: Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been served a legal notice by Eclatant Films Private Limited, which wants Rs 29.67 crore from him under an agreement signed in 2010. The production house has also sent a message to the wider industry, advising producers, distributors and OTT platforms against dealing with him or buying rights to projects linked to his name.

Eclatant Films legal notice and the 2010 agreement

The Indian Express reports that the notice was sent on October 15, and the filmmaker had until October 30 to clear the amount. The sum covers the outstanding principal along with Rs 11.38 crore in interest. Varma has not made any public comment on the matter so far.

The two sides signed the agreement on April 10, 2010, and the Bombay High Court reportedly upheld it on April 17, 2013. According to Eclatant Films, the contract required Varma to get its written No Objection Certificate (NOC) before taking up certain projects. This covered his involvement as a producer, director, writer or co-producer in films that fall under the deal.

The company alleges that he did not follow these terms. It is now demanding Rs 29.67 crore as a result.

Warning to producers, OTT platforms and the film industry

The production house has not limited its message to Varma. Trade publications, including Complete Cinema, report that it has written to producers, distributors, broadcasters and OTT platforms as well. Industry players have been cautioned against buying, streaming or otherwise profiting from films connected to the filmmaker.

Eclatant Films has further indicated that it could invoke a contractual lien if the dues stay unpaid. In practical terms, this may allow it to stake a claim on the rights, shares, financial interests and earnings of films covered by the 2010 agreement.
