CWG 2026: 9 boxing medals assured for India as Ankush, Sakshi, Arundhati, Sachin, Narender reach semifinals
New Delhi: The Indian boxers delivered a dominating performance on in Glasgow on Wednesday, July 29. Narender Berwal, Ankush Yadav,, Arundhati Choudhary and Sachin Siwach have qualified for the semifinals, making it five wins out of five bouts for the country.
With these victories on Wednesday, nine Indian boxers have reached the semifinals, eclipsing India’s boxing tally from the 2022 Games, where the country had finished with seven medals, including three gold, one silver and three bronze.
The five boxers have joined Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Jadumani Singh (55kg), who have already advanced to the semifinals, ensuring at least nine bronze medals for India from the 2026 Commonwealth Games boxing competition.
Indian boxers deliver dominant performances on Day 7
Sakshi (51kg) beat Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers 5-0, and Arundhati (70kg) fought hard to secure a 3-1 win against New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson to assure themselves of at least a bronze medal.
Former world youth champion Siwach also secured himself at least a bronze medal after qualifying for the men’s 60kg semifinals. The world No. 5 beat Botswana’s Treasure Moremi 5-0 by unanimous decision, producing a calm and composed performance.
In the fourth bout of the session, World Boxing Cup Finals silver medallist Ankush Yadav advanced to the men’s 80kg semifinals with a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision win over Seychelles’ Jade Micock.
After that, the Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal also qualified for the semifinals after edging past Samoa’s Michael Seko 3-2 with a split decision in a hard-fought men’s 90+kg bout.
“There is no fun in getting a medal till you don’t win against tough opponents. After I was given the warning, coaches told me, ‘karo ya maro’, and I went all out,” Berwal said after the match.
The contest featured several referee interventions, with the Indian boxer also being docked two points. Despite the penalties, Berwal forced two standing counts on Seko, including one in the final round. The judges eventually ruled the bout 3-2 in Berwal’s favour, making him the fifth Indian boxer to qualify for the semifinals.
