Commonwealth Games 2026: Seema Kaliramna’s inspiring comeback ends with discus bronze

New Delhi: India added another medal to its athletics tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as Seema Kaliramna claimed bronze in the women’s discus throw on Thursday. The Haryana athlete delivered her best throw of 58.65m in her third attempt to secure a place on the podium after a hard-fought competition.

Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won the gold medal with a throw of 61.66m while Canada’s Julia Tunks finished second with 60.67m. India’s Nidhi Rani narrowly missed out on a medal after ending the event in fourth place.

A comeback built on determination

Seema’s bronze carries a special story behind it. The 27-year-old from Bhiwani returned to competition only last year after dealing with post-pregnancy arthritis and a knee injury that forced her away from the sport. Her son is now four years old, and she credited her husband and family for helping her make a successful return.

Speaking after the event, Seema said she could not better her personal best of 59.73m, achieved earlier this year at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar but was satisfied with winning a medal. She also admitted that the cold conditions were challenging, adding that India’s pre-Games training camp in Spała, Poland, helped the athletes prepare for similar weather.

Strong fight in final

The competition saw plenty of movement on the leaderboard. Nidhi Rani briefly moved into the top three with a second-round throw of 55.67m before Seema overtook her with a 57.32m effort. Seema then improved to 58.65m in the third round, which eventually secured the bronze medal despite fouling her final three attempts.

Away from the field, Seema is also pursuing a PhD in Physical Education at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University in Bhiwani. Looking ahead, she said her focus remains simple to keep working hard and perform well rather than chase specific targets.

The medal also continues India’s rich tradition in the Commonwealth Games discus throw with former champion Krishna Poonia and veteran Seema Punia among the country’s previous medal winners in the event.
