Chris Brown gets 8-month suspended prison sentence over 2023 London nightclub attack

New Delhi: American singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over a 2023 assault on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub. The sentence was passed at Southwark Crown Court on Monday (October 26), allowing the singer to avoid immediate imprisonment. Brown will face imprisonment if the suspension conditions are breached.

Brown, 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of affray in July in connection with the incident at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district on February 19, 2023. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. Akinlolu is Brown’s friend and vocal coach.

What did the court say about the attack?

The court heard that Brown struck Diaw twice on the head with a glass tequila bottle. Akinlolu also joined the attack, punching Diaw. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the assault continued as Diaw attempted to escape through the nightclub. He was kicked while sitting on the floor and unable to defend himself.

Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with injuries to his head and knees. Following the incident, Brown and Akinlolu left the UK before warrants were issued for their arrest. Brown was arrested on May 15, 2025, when he returned to the country for his world tour.

During sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the repeated use of a glass bottle against the victim’s head as “plainly dangerous”. The judge also made it clear that Brown’s career and commercial success did not entitle him to special treatment under the law.

The sentencing decision took into account Brown’s guilty plea and mitigating circumstances, including his established career and charitable work, according to reports from the court.

Claire Campbell, senior prosecutor at CPS London South, had earlier described the incident as a “vicious and unprovoked” attack.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” she said in a statement issued after the guilty pleas in July.

Charges dropped after guilty plea

Brown and Akinlolu had initially denied the allegations involving the nightclub incident. Brown had faced charges including assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon. These charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to affray.

Affray is an offence involving the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes a person present at the scene to fear for their safety. Brown’s guilty plea meant the case proceeded to sentencing rather than a trial on the more serious charges.
