Chennai school holiday update: Will Cyclone Murasu rain force school closure on Tuesday?

New Delhi: Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur were closed on Monday following heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions caused by Cyclone Murasu. However, the district administrations have not announced a holiday for Tuesday, November 3, so far.

Schools in Chennai are expected to reopen on Tuesday unless the district administration issues a fresh closure order. Any decision will depend on the rainfall situation and weather conditions across the district.

Heavy rainfall continues in Chennai

The outer bands of Cyclone Murasu have brought heavy showers to Chennai and neighbouring districts. Northern parts of the city have recorded particularly high rainfall over the past 24 hours. Parrys received 149.2 mm of rain while New Manali Town recorded 141.6 mm and Manali received 136.2 mm during the same period.

The Greater Chennai Corporation said there was no major flooding in the city, although water stagnation was reported in a few areas. Two of the 22 subways in Chennai were temporarily flooded but have since been cleared and reopened.

Heavy rain has also affected Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur districts. Bad weather conditions have disrupted flight operations at Chennai airport, leading to the cancellation of several flights.

What is weather forecast for Tuesday?

Chennai is likely to receive intermittent to heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds as Cyclone Murasu’s outer rain bands continue to affect the region. Rough sea conditions have also prompted warnings to fishermen along the north Tamil Nadu coast.

While the cyclone is expected to have its main impact along the Andhra Pradesh coast after midnight, Chennai and neighbouring districts may continue to receive rain.

The district administration has not issued a fresh school holiday order for Tuesday so schools are therefore expected to function as usual unless officials announce otherwise. Students and parents are advised to check their respective school notifications for any last-minute changes for tomorrow.
