Big relief for Vijay! Wife Sangeetha withdraws divorce petition, case officially closed
New Delhi: The divorce proceedings between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, have officially come to an end after she withdrew her petition before the family court on Friday (August 7).
Sangeetha joined the hearing through video conferencing and informed the court that she no longer wished to pursue the case. Following her submission, the court formally disposed of the matter.

The legal battle had begun in February this year, when Sangeetha approached the family court in Chengalpattu seeking dissolution of her marriage. In her petition, she cited irreconcilable differences, sought permanent alimony, and requested permission to continue living at the couple’s residence in Chennai’s Neelankarai.
The case, however, saw multiple adjournments over the past few months. During a hearing on June 15, Sangeetha had already indicated that she intended to withdraw the petition, prompting the court to postpone the matter until August 7. In another hearing last month, neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court, with their respective lawyers informing the judge that both were unable to attend in person.
Rumours about problems in Vijay and Sangeetha’s marriage have circulated since 2023 after she was noticeably absent from several of the actor-turned-politician’s public appearances. Although those reports were dismissed at the time, speculation resurfaced in 2025 when she did not attend key political events organised by TVK, including the party’s second state conference.
Vijay and Sangeetha have been married for nearly 27 years. The couple tied the knot in Chennai on August 25, 1999, in a traditional Hindu ceremony despite belonging to different faiths. They welcomed their son in 2000 and their daughter in 2005.
On the political front, Vijay recently scripted history after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. The party later formed the government with the support of Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, leading to the state’s first coalition government in several decades.
