Apple May Soon Launch Enhanced iCloud+ Plans for AI, CEO Tim Cook Suggests

Apple’s foray into AI is just beginning, but it may not remain free for everyone. If you plan to use Apple’s upcoming AI features all day, every day, you will likely have to pay a bit more eventually. Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted that the company is working on new upgrade options for iCloud+ that would allow users to purchase higher AI usage limits. He shared this information during Apple’s latest earnings call, suggesting the company expects users to rely heavily on Apple Intelligence once the new Siri AI launches later this year.

Apple Could Introduce Paid AI Plans

Apple already includes its AI features—known as Apple Intelligence—on compatible devices. However, some of these features run on Apple’s cloud servers rather than directly on the iPhone or Mac. Earlier this year, Apple confirmed that cloud-based AI features have daily usage limits, as they require powerful servers to process requests.

Now, Cook has indicated that Apple is looking for ways to let users pay for increased AI access “We will have some sort of upgrade options in iCloud+ so people can opt for higher-tier plans,” he stated during the earnings call.

Simply put, this means frequent AI users could subscribe to a premium iCloud+ plan to get higher usage limits, while casual users could stick with the standard allowance.

Why Apple Might Charge for AI

The timing is important because Apple is getting ready to launch its Siri AI with iOS 18 later this year. This new version of Siri is going to be able to understand what is on the screen, do things in apps and even have conversations, like ChatGPT.

All of these things need a lot of power to work especially when Apple has to handle requests. If Apple lets everyone use these features all the time it could cost them a lot of money. So, Apple is making levels of iCloud+ that will help pay for these costs and people who use a lot of Apple things can get extra AI features if they want to.

Apple has not yet announced pricing, launch dates, or details regarding how these new plans would work. For now, Cook’s comments simply indicate that paid AI upgrades are being considered as Apple prepares for the broader adoption of Apple Intelligence.
