Apple acknowledges iPhone Duo display issue
Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has hit an unexpected problem just days after going on sale. While the device attracted huge attention and strong demand at launch, some early buyers are now reporting damage to its inner display.

The iPhone Duo began shipping last week after generating significant interest among customers. Designed to open like a passport booklet, the foldable phone quickly sold out online, while limited store inventory prompted buyers to queue up to purchase the new device.
However, some owners have reported cracks and lines appearing on the inner screen, particularly around the phone’s central hinge. In several cases, the damage reportedly appeared shortly after customers started using the device.
Apple has now acknowledged the issue and says it is affecting only a small number of units. In a statement, the company said, “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.”
The company’s confirmation comes as analysts were already expecting supply constraints because of the complexity involved in producing a foldable smartphone. The reported display failures could add another challenge for Apple, although the company has stressed that the issue is limited to a very small batch.
What is causing the iPhone Duo display problem?
Apple has not yet publicly identified the exact reason behind the screen failures. However, repair specialists at iFixit have offered some possible clues after examining the phone’s design.
Using teardown footage, patents and CT scans, iFixit created a 3D simulation of the iPhone Duo’s hinge mechanism. Its analysis suggests that the affected area is located beneath a display cable and close to a central support bar inside the hinge.
The support bar is designed to move out of the way as the phone folds. According to the analysis, if it does not move as intended, additional pressure could be transferred to the display. This may create a “stress hotspot”, eventually causing the inner screen to crack.
Despite identifying the potential weakness, iFixit still gave the iPhone Duo its highest repairability rating among the foldable phones it has tested.
How affected users can get a replacement
Customers experiencing the display problem can contact Apple for a replacement. Apple said, “If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
Importantly, an active AppleCare+ subscription is not required to qualify for a replacement related to this specific manufacturing defect. Customers who purchased the iPhone Duo through a mobile carrier can also contact AppleCare directly rather than going through their carrier.
Apple’s quick response has received praise from industry observers. Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at market research firm IDC, described the replacement programme as the “right first step.” He said that responding quickly and transparently can help limit potential damage to Apple’s brand, drawing a comparison with Samsung’s handling of the original Galaxy Fold display problems in 2019.
