Feast turns fatal? Over 100 fall ill after Odisha housewarming event

New Delhi: More than 100 people reportedly fell sick after attending a housewarming feast in Kharida village under Jaleswar block in Odisha’s Balasore district. Officials said those affected showed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. More than 60 people were reportedly in serious condition while over 30 children were among those who fell ill.

The villagers had attended a feast at a housewarming event on Wednesday night. Several people started feeling sick after returning home from the feast. They reportedly developed vomiting and diarrhoea later that night. After people started falling sick family members quickly took them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Some patients who were in a serious condition were later shifted to Balasore for better medical care.

Health officials step in after feast leaves villagers sick

A local resident Chandrajit Pal said there was a feast in the village and the health of people who attended it started getting worse by Thursday morning. He said the affected villagers were reportedly stable later. Ward member Tapan Samal said a housewarming ceremony was held on August 5 followed by a feast. He said people began reaching the hospital around midnight with severe stomach pain and vomiting. The BDO also visited the village to take stock of the situation. More than 100 people were reportedly affected and more patients were still arriving at the hospital.

Following the incident, a medical team reached Kharida village to assess the situation and monitor the health condition of the affected residents. The team also conducted health examinations in the village as part of the response.
