Study Reveals Apple Vision Pro Can Help Doctors Perform Eye Surgery 20% Faster

Apple’s Vision Pro headset may have found its true calling. According to a new study, surgeons who used the Apple Vision Pro instead of looking at a conventional monitor finished a common eye surgery nearly 20% faster, feeling less tired and stressed during the process.

The study, published in the journal ‘AJO International’ looked at 32 procedures to unblock ducts. This is a surgery that uses a camera placed through the nose. Usually the surgeon has to turn their head to the side to look at a monitor that’s, across the room while they perform the operation. Staying in that position for a time—sometimes for hours—can be very challenging.

In 16 of the 32 surgeries studied, doctors used the Vision Pro, which projected the camera image directly in front of their eyes; this allowed them to keep their heads facing forward at all times, almost as if the screen were right in front of their eyeballs.

The Vision Pro was used to do surgeries that took 34.4 minutes on average. This is compared to surgeries that used a monitor, which took about 42.7 minutes. So the Vision Pro surgeries were 8 minutes shorter. All the surgeries, with the Vision Pro and with the monitor were successful. None of them had any problems. The surgeons who used the Vision Pro liked it. They said they felt less tired both physically and mentally when they used it. The Vision Pro is a device that people usually think of when they watch movies on a plane. It seems to be pretty good at helping surgeons do their job. The Vision Pro got a review, from the surgeons who used it. The Vision Pro was a lot cheaper and smaller, than the monitor system it replaced. People who did the study were happy to see this. They also said that this study was very small and that bigger studies would be needed before hospitals started using the Vision Pro all the time. The Vision Pro is a deal because it can replace the old monitors but the researchers want to make sure it works well in big trials before it is used everywhere. The Vision Pro needs to be tested more before hospitals can use it to replace their monitors.

What is the Apple Vision Pro?

The Apple Vision Pro is like a computer that you can wear. This thing is really cool because it lets you play around with stuff on a screen that shows you the world and adds digital things to it. The Apple Vision Pro was first available in February 2024. On in October 2025 they made it better with a faster M5 chip. It uses cameras to mix the world with digital stuff. So, you can look around. See virtual windows and apps and pictures floating around you. You can block out the real world and just focus on the digital stuff for a really immersive experience, with the Apple Vision Pro.

It does not use handheld controllers. Instead, everything is controlled simply by looking at objects and tapping your fingers together, while a side dial lets you switch between reality and full immersion. It runs on two Apple-designed chips, offers about 2.5 hours of battery life waist-mounted battery pack, and has a starting price that—frankly—makes its new role as a surgical tool seem somewhat more justified.
