Stephen Fleming approaches Michael Hussey for England batting coach role
New Delhi: New England Test head coach has approached former Australia batter Michael Hussey to join his coaching staff as the batting coach, reports SEN. While the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is yet to make any formal offer, Hussey is reportedly Fleming’s first choice for the role as the Three Lions prepare for a new era in Test cricket.

Hussey is currently working with Welsh Fire in The Hundred and is yet to decide whether to accept the role or not. If he accepts the proposal, it would reunite Fleming and Hussey, who have worked together for nearly two decades. They first met during the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, representing
Fleming played for the franchise for just one season, but became the head coach in 2009, marking the beginning of one of the IPL’s most successful eras. Hussey joined CSK as one of the most premier overseas batters, amassing 2,213 runs in 64 matches for the franchise from 2008 to 2015 before becoming batting coach after his retirement.
Fleming-Hussey partnership
Fleming and Hussey have worked together for 15 years at CSK in different roles. Hussey initially was the franchise’s star batter and won the Orange Cap in 2013 after smashing 733 runs before joining Fleming in the coaching setup.
Their long-standing partnership ended earlier this year when Fleming and CSK decided to part ways following the 2026 IPL season. Media Reports also suggest that Fleming could approach former CSK bowling coach Eric Simons to boost the pace bowling department.
Fleming will not immediately take charge as Test head coach of the Three Lions, with Marcus Trescothick overseeing England’s three-match home Test series against Pakistan, which will start on August 19. Fleming will officially begin his tenure during England’s Test tour of South Africa, which starts on December 17 in Johannesburg.
