Gas cutter ATM robbery case: Delhi police constable named as alleged mastermind

New Delhi: According to police the series of ATM robberies was allegedly planned by the accused Delhi Police constable. Officials said the gang used gas cutters to break open ATM machines before escaping with the cash.

The five people arrested in the case have been identified as Delhi Police constable Hukam Chand aged 34 his nephew Arvind aged 26 both from Atali village in Faridabad and Vikas Kumar aged 24 Abhishek aged 19 and Vishal Kumar aged 19 who are residents of Siwan district in Bihar.

Two ATM thefts trigger massive CCTV hunt

Police said a representative of a private payment services company filed a complaint after one of its ATMs at Bhupani Mod was allegedly cut open during the night of July 3 and Rs 653000 was stolen. Based on the complaint police registered a case at Bhupani Police Station.

Police said another ATM was targeted on the night of July 26 when Rs 571000 was allegedly stolen from a machine in Sector 58 using the same method. After the second incident investigators stepped up their search for those involved.Officials said police examined footage from more than 1000 CCTV cameras before tracing the accused. The five men were arrested on August 3 and 4.

Debt allegedly drove Delhi constable to plan ATM heists

Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Aman Yadav said questioning of the accused revealed that Delhi Police constable Hukam Chand was allegedly the main planner behind the gang. According to police he was facing heavy debt and allegedly joined hands with his nephew Arvind to steal money by cutting open ATM machines.

Police said the two allegedly brought in Vikas and Raju who worked as gas welders to carry out the thefts. Yadav said Hukam Chand allegedly selected the ATM shared all the required details with them and arranged the equipment including the gas cutter. Police alleged that the two welders later cut open the ATM at Bhupani Mod on July 3 and stole Rs 653000.

Probe reveals alleged expansion of ATM robbery gang

After the first ATM theft Raju allegedly went back to Bihar to avoid being caught by the police. However officials said he was later arrested there in a motorcycle theft case and is currently lodged in a jail in Bihar. Assistant Commissioner of Police Aman Yadav said he will be brought to Faridabad through a production warrant. Police also said that Vikas later cut all ties with Hukam Chand.

According to the investigation Hukam Chand then allegedly called his brother Vishal and Abhishek Kumar from Bihar to join the gang. Police said the group later targeted another ATM in Sector 58 on the night of July 26 and allegedly stole Rs 571000 after cutting open the machine. ACP Aman Yadav said Hukam Chand joined Delhi Police in 2016 and was posted on PCR duty in Bijwasan at the time of the alleged incidents.
