UEFA threatens FIFA and Gianni Infantino with legal action over World Cup stakes sell off plan

New Delhi: UEFA has threatened legal action against FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, over their scrapped plan to privatise major tournaments, including the . FIFA floated a proposal last month, announcing that it is ready to sell off stakes in major FIFA competitions to private investors from across the globe.

The proposal was met with criticism from all corners, with several football governing bodies in Europe, North America, Central America, and Asia questioning it. UEFA slammed the proposal, stating that was crossing a line with a plan the world football governing body should never have crossed.

It said that the soul and governance of football were not assets to trade and that nobody owns the game. After UEFA became the first major football body to question the proposal and Infantino’s leadership, several continental bodies joined the bandwagon in criticising FIFA’s move.

FIFA had to scrap the proposal after outrage from all corners and the plan to “invite third parties to make minority, non-controlling investments” in major tournaments through its subsidiary FIFA Forward Enterprise (FEE) was put on hold.

UEFA threatens legal action in letter to FIFA

UEFA has now reportedly threatened legal action against FIFA in a letter sent to the world governing body. The European football body said that it is considering legal action, “arbitration, and/or regulatory complaints (together, the ‘proceedings’)” arising in connection with FIFA’s proposed privatisation plans.

In their letter, UEFA stated that it wants FIFA to take immediate steps in identifying, locating and preserving all documents related to the proposal. It also stated that the obligations are independent of any existing rules regarding document destruction or deletion at the world body.

“UEFA wants immediate steps to identify, locate and preserve all documents and electronically stored information described in this notice that are in your or FIFA’s possession, custody or control,” UEFA said in the letter.

“These obligations arise independently of any internal retention policy you or your organisation maintain and supersede any routine document destruction or deletion policies that would otherwise apply,” it added.

UEFA also mentioned in the letter that it wants all the documents related to the “payment structure” that was promised to FIFA member nations as part of the proposal. Infantino has been urged to acknowledge receipt of the letter in writing within five days of receiving it.
