Monsoon snake alert: Simple steps to keep snakes away from your home during rainy season

New Delhi: While the cool weather during the monsoon brings relief from the summer heat, it also increases the presence of mosquitoes, insects and snakes around homes. Continuous rainfall floods snake burrows, forcing the reptiles to seek dry and safe places, often bringing them into residential areas.

Snakes may hide inside shoes, helmets, storage spaces or even enter homes in search of shelter and prey. Although many people rely on home remedies such as garlic or neem oil to repel snakes, these methods are generally considered unreliable. Instead, maintaining a clean environment and eliminating potential hiding spots are more effective preventive measures.

Homeowners are advised to avoid storing unused pots, bricks, cardboard boxes or other clutter on balconies and around the house, as these provide ideal hiding places for snakes. Fallen leaves, overgrown grass and thick vegetation should also be cleared regularly to reduce the chances of reptiles taking shelter nearby.

Sealing cracks and openings around the house is another important precaution. Small gaps beneath doors, cracks in walls, and openings around drainage outlets can serve as entry points for snakes. Repairing damaged walls and keeping doors and windows properly closed can help prevent them from entering.

Residents should also ensure that stagnant water does not collect in buckets, tyres, pots or other containers. Standing water attracts frogs and insects, which in turn attract snakes looking for food. Similarly, controlling rodent populations is essential, as rats are a common food source for snakes. Keeping garbage bins covered and avoiding leaving pet food outdoors can help discourage rodents.

Regular pruning of tree branches and climbing vines is also recommended. Branches that touch balconies, terraces or house walls can provide snakes with easy access into homes.

Adequate lighting around the house, especially during the night, can further reduce the likelihood of snake encounters, as snakes generally prefer dark and damp environments.

By following these simple precautions and maintaining a clean, clutter-free environment, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of snakes entering their homes during the monsoon season.
