Commonwealth Games 2026 Highlights, Day 6: Preeti Pawar reaches boxing semi-finals, Weightlifter Nirupama Devi misses medal

New Delhi: India’s Commonwealth Games campaign saw contrasting emotions on the field with moments of celebration and disappointment across boxing and weightlifting. Boxer Preeti Pawar delivered a major boost by defeating Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde 5-0 in the women’s 54kg quarter-final, booking her place in the semi-finals and guaranteeing India at least a bronze medal.

However, the women’s 63kg weightlifting final ended in heartbreak for Nirupama Devi Seram. After managing a 93kg lift in the snatch round, Nirupama could not register a successful clean and jerk attempt, finishing the competition without a total mark and missing out on a medal.

There was better news in the women’s 69kg weightlifting final, where Harjinder Kaur produced a record-breaking performance by lifting 99kg in her second snatch attempt to set a new Commonwealth Games record.

Meanwhile, India’s boxing campaign continued with Priya Ghanghas fighting hard in her quarter-final while Parveen Hooda’s medal hopes ended after a narrow defeat against England’s Sacha Hickey.
