‘History has been created’: PM Modi hails Sharmila Dhankar after her gold medal at CWG 2026
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to laud India’s para-athlete after her historic gold medal at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games. Sharmila clinched India’s first-ever gold medal in para-athletics at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, July 27.

Sharmila won the gold medal in the women’s F57 shot put event with her season-best throw of 9.81m. With her memorable triumph, she ended India’s 20-year wait for a gold medal in para-athletics at the . It was India’s first medal in para-athletics in CWG since Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan won a bronze medal in men’s seated discus throw in 2006.
PM Modi called it a historic moment for India in Glasgow as he hailed Sharmila for her golden triumph. The Prime Minister congratulated her for her remarkable performance and highlighted how it ended India’s two-decade-long wait for a para-athletics gold at the Games.
“History has been created in Glasgow,” PM Modi wrote in a tweet. “Congratulations to Sharmila for a very special Gold in the Women’s Shot Put F57 event and also for a season-best throw. PM Modi congratulates Sarvesh Kushare and Ajaya Babu
PM Modi also posted congratulatory messages for India’s weightlifter Ajaya Babu and high jumper Sarvesh Kushare after their medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Ajaya Babu won a silver medal in the men’s 79kg weightlifting with a total lift of 330kg.
He missed out on the gold by just 1 kg after Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad. Muhammad lifted a total of 331kg combined to take the top spot on the podium. Meanwhile, Kushare won the silver medal in men’s high jump with the best jump of 2.25m in the final. He became the first Indian to win a silver medal in high jump at the Commonwealth Games.

India have so far won a total of ten medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026. India added six medals to its tally on Monday, including a second gold. Weightlifters continued their impressive show for India on Monday with three medals. Gyaneshwari Yadav won a silver in the women’s 53kg weightlifting, while Bindyarani Devi won a silver in the women’s 58kg category. Ajaya Babu added a third medal by winning silver in the men’s 79kg category later in the day.
