Jasprit Bumrah returns, maiden call-up for Saransh Jain as India announce squad for Sri Lanka Test series

New Delhi: A couple of regulars were missing as an injury-marred announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, July 28. Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah made his comeback into the Test squad, but his availability remains subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI medical staff at the Centre of Excellence (CoE).

If declared fully fit, Bumrah will return to lead India’s pace attack in the two-match series alongside Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar, who has retained his spot in the squad after decent performances across formats. Shubman Gill will continue to lead the side with KL Rahul serving as his deputy.

Besides Bumrah, there is also uncertainty surrounding the participation of batter Sai Sudharsan, whose selection is also subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI CoE. India will head into the series without pace all-rounder Nitish Reddy and pacer Harshit Rana, both of whom have been regular across formats.

Both Reddy and Rana are currently recovering from respective injuries and have not been cleared to return for Team India. All-rounder Washington Sundar has not been named in the initial squad as he will not be available for selection in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

In Sundar’s absence, selectors have retained spin all-rounder Manav Suthar in the squad alongside spinner Saransh Jain. Axar Patel is also not part of the squad. However, senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been selected for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
