CWG 2026: Sharmila wins maiden para athletics gold, Sarvesh bags silver as India’s medal haul hits 10

New Delhi: It was a medal rush for India on day 5 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Monday, July 28, as Indian athletes added a total of six medals to the country’s tally, increasing the medal haul to ten overall. After weightlifters Gyaneshwari Yadav and Bindyarani Devi won a silver and bronze in their respective categories, India added 4 more medals to their tally on Monday night.

Sharmila Dhankar clinches gold to script history

Sharmila Dhankar scripted history by clinching a gold medal in the women’s shot put F57 event. Sharmila clinched India’s first-ever gold medal in para-athletics at the Commonwealth Games. She produced her season-best throw of 9.81m in the women’s shot put F57 final to clinch the top spot on the podium.

Sharmila brought an end to India’s 20-year-long wait for a Commonwealth Games medal in para-athletics. India last won a para-athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games in the 2006 edition when Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan won a bronze medal in the men’s seated discus throw event.

Sarvesh Kushare wins silver

Soon after Sharmila’s golden triumph, India’s long jumper Sarvesh Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Kushare too etched his name in the record books by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in men’s high jump at CWG.

He cleared 2.25m in the final to grab the second spot on the podium. Sarvesh went for gold by attempting to clear 2.28m, however, he failed to do so. He finished behind Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford, who won the elusive gold. England’s Kimani Jack clinched the bronze medal with his best clearance of 2.20m.

Ajaya Babu wins silver in weightlifting

Weightlifter Valluri Ajaya Babu added a third medal to India’s tally in weightlifting on Day 5 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Monday. He won a silver in the men’s 79kg category after an intense battle in the final. The weightlifter from Andhra Pradesh lifted a total of 330 kg (149kg in snatch and 181kg in clean & jerk) in the final.

He missed out on the gold medal by just 1 kg to Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad. Muhammad lifted a total of 331kg combined to set a new Commonwealth Games record and win the gold medal in the men’s 79kg weightlifting category.

Shilpa Syla upgraded to bronze

India’s Shilpa Syla bagged the bronze medal after her position was upgraded by the organisers following a successful protest. She won the bronze medal in the women’s F57 shot put event, where her teammate Sharmila won gold. Shilpa initially finished 4th with a personal-best throw of 7.26m, however, the officials later declared that Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi had no valid mark in the final, which helped Shilpa finish third officially to get the bronze medal.
