Suryakumar’s leave, Shreyas Iyer becomes Team India’s T20 captain; Gave a big statement as soon as he arrived

Indian T20 team’s new captain Shreyas Iyer on Sunday said that he has loved facing challenges since childhood and getting the captaincy of the national team does not mean that he will have to change his personality. This 31-year-old player was appointed the captain of the Indian T20 team on Saturday. He has replaced Suryakumar Yadav, under whose leadership India won the T20 World Cup title in March. Suryakumar has not got a place in the team either.

Iyer said he wants to remain the same person who made his mark playing in the highly competitive cricket environment of Mumbai. “I don’t need to change my personality. I have to remain the same person I was before. I won’t try to be like anyone else or live under anyone’s tutelage,” he said at an event. He said that growing up in a cricket-loving city like Mumbai, challenges have been a part of his life.

Iyer said, “I have always liked challenges. The level of cricket in Mumbai is very high and the competition is also very tough. Every other child there dreams of representing Mumbai.” Iyer said that his thinking has always been to win. “My approach has always been to win every challenge thrown my way. Learning and winning are important in their own right, but enjoying the game and developing a competitive spirit takes you to a different level,” he said. He said, “When you get such responsibility, you want to accept it. At present, this role as captain is a big challenge for me.”

Meanwhile, former India captain and former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that Iyer has earned the opportunity to captain the national team on the basis of his performance. Iyer will captain the Indian team for the first time in the two-match T20 series on the Ireland tour. He played his last T20 International match in December 2023, after which he was dropped from the team. Ganguly said, “Shreyas has performed well and he has earned this responsibility on the basis of his performance. I would not say that removing Suryakumar Yadav is unfair. The selectors have taken their decision.
