22-year-old kills father to death at night after being scolded for hitting sister in Ghaziabad

New Delhi: A 22-year-old man was arrested in Loni early on Saturday after he allegedly murdered his 58-year-old father inside their Ashok Vihar residence. The attack occurred between 2am and 3am while the victim and other family members were fast asleep.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Irfan, 58, and the accused as Mohammad Shavez, 22. According to investigators, Shavez used a sickle to repeatedly strike his father’s head. The victim’s cries alerted relatives sleeping nearby, who immediately restrained the youth, called the police, and took the injured man to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police stated that the violence followed a domestic disagreement that started the previous evening. On Friday, Shavez had an argument with his younger sister. When their father intervened to support his daughter, he reprimanded Shavez and slapped him. Investigators said Shavez harboured resentment over the incident, stayed awake, picked up a sickle stored in the house, and attacked his father later that night.

Police complaint and arrest

The victim’s elder daughter subsequently lodged a formal complaint at the Loni police station. “Around 2am on November 7, my brother attacked my father with a sickle or sharp-edged weapon and caused his murder,” the FIR, accessed by HT, stated.

“The suspect attacked his father with a sharp-edged weapon (sickle), inflicting multiple severe injuries to his head. Hearing his father’s cries, other family members rushed to him and apprehended the boy. They informed the police and rushed the injured man to a hospital, where he was declared dead. The police later arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon,” Ram Kishan, ACP of Loni Circle, told HT.

Dispute over suspect’s age

Following the elder daughter’s statement, an FIR was lodged under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

While the family initially claimed Shavez was only 15, official inquiries revealed otherwise. “Initially, the suspect’s family told police that he was 15 years old. Later, when the police inquired at his school, the principal provided written confirmation that he is a Class 8 student born in 2004. Based on this age, the police arrested him for murder. He is not a minor, but major in age,” Surendra Nath Tiwari, DCP (rural), told HT on Saturday evening.
