Why Cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in younger adults?

New Delhi: Cancer is no longer limited to older people. Did you know? Currently, many younger adults are getting diagnosed with cancer. Hence, factors such as lifestyles, obesity, family history and environmental exposures can lead to a surge in cancer cases in young adults. It is necessary to seek timely help and improve the quality of life. Read on to know more about this in the article below.

Cancer cases are rising at an alarming rate in the country. Cancer is often linked to ageing, but an increasing number of younger adults are now being diagnosed with it. Cases of cancers, including colorectal, breast, thyroid and some gastrointestinal cancers, are being reported in people below aged 25-50.

Earlier, it was common in those above 60. The causes behind the surge in cancer cases can be sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, tobacco, alcohol, obesity, unhealthy eating patterns, obesity and higher consumption of processed foods. Even environmental and occupational exposures may also raise the chances of lung cancer.

Some individuals may also carry genetic mutations that increase their chances of developing cancer at a younger age. However, it is necessary to understand that not every young person diagnosed with cancer has a family history of the disease.

Understand the symptoms that need attention by the doctor

The symptoms: It is crucial for younger adults to pay attention to symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort, changes in bowel habits, unusual lumps, fatigue or even unexplained bleeding. These symptoms are often mistaken for common health problems, resulting in delays in medical evaluation. However, make sure to prioritize your health and go for timely check-ups.

Treatment: If you are diagnosed with cancer then the expert will decide the line of treatment that may involve surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Don’t self-medicate for any of the symptoms as doing so can be risky for you. Don’t discontinue the treatment on your own and follow the guidelines given by the doctor.

This is what younger adults should do?

Make sure to stay extra vigilant and maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, quit tobacco, alcohol and get proper sleep. People with a family history of cancer should seek advice on genetic counselling or earlier screening as advised by the doctor. So, stay alert and don’t delay treatment.
