GRAP-III curbs in Delhi-NCR ahead of Diwali, check restrictions and metro timings

New Delhi: Air pollution in Delhi and the National Capital Region has worsened ahead of Diwali, prompting authorities to impose stricter restrictions under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced that the curbs would come into force across the entire NCR with immediate effect.

The decision came after Delhi’s average AQI reached 382 on Thursday, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category. Stage-II restrictions had already been in place since November 2 but the latest deterioration in air quality led to further measures.

GRAP is an emergency plan designed to control pollution in Delhi-NCR. It has four stages based on AQI levels. Stage I applies when the AQI is between 201 and 300, while Stage II comes into force at 301-400. Stage III is meant for the ‘severe’ category (401-450) and Stage IV applies when the AQI crosses 450.

What GRAP-III restrictions mean

Under Stage III, non-essential construction and demolition activities have been banned. This includes earthwork, piling, trenching and certain operations at ready-mix concrete plants.

The restrictions have also been placed on vehicles. BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel four-wheelers will not be allowed to operate on roads in Delhi and neighbouring NCR districts. Inter-state diesel buses have also been barred from entering or operating in the capital.

The rules further restrict the movement of construction materials such as sand and cement, particularly on unpaved roads. Stone crushers, mining activities and hot-mix plants not using clean fuel will remain shut. Diesel generator sets are also prohibited, except for essential and emergency services.

Private offices have been advised to consider work-from-home or hybrid arrangements. Schools up to Class 5 are to shift to online classes to limit children’s exposure to polluted air.

Delhi Metro Timings Changed For Diwali

Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced revised train timings for Diwali on November 8. On the Pink, Magenta and Grey Lines, services will begin at 6 am instead of the usual 7 am on Sundays.

However, the last Metro train on all lines including the Airport Express Line will depart from terminal stations at 10 pm instead of 11 pm. DMRC has advised passengers to plan their journeys accordingly and check its official website and social media handles for further updates.
