Lung cancer symptoms: Hidden signs beyond cough, from weight loss to hoarse voice, that need early checks
New Delhi: One of the most easily recognisable signs of lung cancer is a chronic cough. Nonetheless, there are instances where lung cancer does not necessarily start with any respiratory ailment. In some cases, some of the earliest symptoms of lung cancer can occur elsewhere in the body. One should be cautious about these lesser-known symptoms, which may need proper diagnosis and treatment.

Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite
There may be times when a person experiences weight loss without making any change in diet or physical exercise. Cancerous tumours can disrupt the way the body burns energy. This results in weight loss and loss of appetite.
Chronic shoulder, back or chest pain
Pain is a possible symptom that can emanate from lung cancer outside the chest area. Depending on where the tumour is located, it can cause chronic shoulder, back or chest pain. When such symptoms persist or become worse with time, one should seek medical attention.
Hoarseness or change in voice
Hoarseness of voice may be due to a lung tumour pressing on the nerve that controls the vocal cords. Hoarseness usually develops due to an infection of the throat or to stomach acid. However, if the condition persists for several weeks, it should be examined.
Chronic respiratory infections
Chronic bronchitis or pneumonia that tends to affect the same part of the lung should be treated as a warning sign of an underlying obstruction caused by a tumour.
Unexplained fatigue and weakness
Exhaustion that continues despite ample rest is yet another symptom that can be easily ignored. The tiredness associated with cancer is because it impairs the metabolism and functionality of the body. This exhaustion can coexist with anaemia or lower oxygen levels.
Headaches and neurological symptoms
In certain instances, lung cancer metastasises to the brain. As a result, one may suffer from unexplained headaches, dizziness, seizures and vision problems.
