Ishan Kishan yet to regain match fitness, ruled out of 3rd T20I against New Zealand

New Delhi: Ishan Kishan won’t be available for selection when India take on in the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series at the Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday, October 26. Kishan has been ruled out of the third T20I after missing the last game due to an adductor injury.

The wicket-keeper sustained an injury to his right adductor during the T20I series opener against New Zealand in Christchurch. The BCCI, in a release, confirmed that Kishan is yet to attain match fitness and has been ruled out of the third T20I against New Zealand. His fitness continues to be monitored by the BCCI medical team.

“He is yet to regain match fitness and is ruled out of the third T20I to be played on October 27, 2026, in Wellington. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring Ishan’s progress,” BCCI said in a release.

Kumar Kushagra comes in as Ishan Kishan’s cover

BCCI also confirmed that Jharkhand wicket-keeper batter Kumar Kushagra has been roped in as a replacement for Kishan for the third T20I against New Zealand. Kushagra was part of the India A team and has now been slotted into the senior side to provide cover for injured Kishan.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel also spoke about Kishan’s injury during the pre-match presser, insisting that the left-hander is recovering well but won’t be part of the third T20I against New Zealand. Morkel said Kishan will sit out as a precautionary measure.

“Ishan is doing well. He will be training today. For tomorrow, I think he is not available for selection, just as a precaution,” Morkel said at the pre-match press conference.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi open for India?

In Kishan’s absence, India roped in teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into their playing XI in the second T20I against New Zealand last week. However, the 15-year-old was asked to bat at no.3 as India retained their opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. It remains to be seen if Sooryavanshi will get a chance to open the innings in the third T20I in Kishan’s absence.
