Sonu Nigam apologises over Pahalgam remark after KRV threatens protests over Bengaluru concert

New Delhi: Singer has apologised to Kannadigas over his controversial , days before his scheduled concert in Bengaluru on October 24. The apology comes after pro-Kannada organisation Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) urged the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to deny permission for the event and warned of protests if the concert goes ahead.

In a video message, Sonu addressed the controversy and said he was willing to apologise repeatedly if it helped preserve his decades-long relationship with the people of Karnataka. “When you love someone and want the relationship to last, you don’t mind saying sorry a thousand times,” the singer said in Kannada.

Sonu Nigam apologises over controversial remark

In a video, apologised and said, “So, my dear family, if anything I’ve said inadvertently has hurt you, I’m so sorry. You know I’m not the kind of person who would ever hurt anyone, especially my family from Karnataka. You have given me so much love and respect over the last 30 years, and I don’t want any small misunderstanding to taint that relationship or cause any bitterness.”

Why did KRV oppose Sonu Nigam’s Bengaluru concert?

Sonu’s apology comes after KRV state president TA Narayana Gowda objected to the singer’s upcoming Bengaluru performance over comments he made during a college event in April 2025.

KRV had written to the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner seeking denial of permission for the October 24 concert. The organisation also reportedly warned of statewide protests if the performance was allowed to proceed.

“Kannadigas have not forgotten this wound,” KRV wrote in its letter to the Police Commissioner.

The controversy dates back to Sonu’s performance at East Point College in Bengaluru. During the event, an audience member asked the singer to perform a Kannada song, following which Sonu objected to the manner in which the request was allegedly made.

“The best songs I have sung are in Kannada… I didn’t like it when a boy asked me to sing in Kannada. He was so rudely threatening, ‘Kannada, Kannada.’ This is the reason for the Pahalgam attack,” Sonu had said. His reference to the Pahalgam terror attack triggered widespread criticism in Karnataka at the time.
