Zoho Halts Salary Hikes, Founder Sridhar Vembu Warns of Tough Times

Zoho founder has told employees to expect a time ahead. He said the company won’t give its yearly salary raises this year. This decision is because of rising costs from intelligence, more expensive servers and global political issues that are making things harder for the business.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Vembu explained that the software industry is facing an uncertain future. He pointed out that the growing use of AI has significantly increased operating costs, forcing companies to reconsider their spending. According to him, server prices for data centres have risen four-fold, adding to the financial pressure on businesses investing in AI infrastructure.

Zoho Suspends Annual Salary Hikes

To manage expenses, Zoho has reduced its marketing budget and informed employees that annual salary hikes will not take place this year. Vembu acknowledged that the decision was difficult and apologised to employees for being unable to avoid the suspension of pay increases.

The move shows how tough things are for tech companies now. They’re putting a lot of money into AI. They also have to deal with higher costs for things, like servers and data centers. On top of that the global business scene keeps changing in ways that are hard to plan for. It’s a lot to handle.

For Zoho, controlling expenses has become a priority as the company works to adapt to the changing technology landscape without resorting to major workforce cuts.

Zoho Founder Aims to Avoid Mass Layoffs

Despite the difficult outlook, Vembu said the company would make efforts to protect jobs. “We will work hard to avoid mass layoffs,” he said, while warning that the outlook for software jobs in general is “grim”.

He also revealed that Zoho has not increased its employee headcount for the past 18 months, indicating that hiring has remained on hold during this period.

Vembu thanked the employees for understanding the company’s situation and for supporting it during the phase. His words show that Zoho is working to keep costs under control and keep its team strong as it gets ready for shifts in the software industry.

Zoho Preparing for a Major Reinvention

Vembu also indicated that the company is going through a period of reinvention, with the next three to five years expected to be crucial in determining how successful those efforts will be.

In his post, he said: “We are in the middle of reinventing ourselves. The next 3-5 years will decide how our reinvention has worked. Please pray for us 🙏”

His remarks highlight the uncertainty that Zoho is facing as AI transforms the technology sector. The company has paused salary increases, cut back on marketing spending and kept hiring steady for 18 months. It is trying to move through the slowdown without making layoffs.
