Google to change Gemini AI plans from October 9; here’s what users need to know
Your access to Gemini is changing soon. Starting October 9, 2026, Google will update how you use Gemini, making access to different AI models more clearly dependent on your specific AI plan. In practice, users of the free version of Gemini—and even AI Plus subscribers—will see their access to the more powerful Pro models restricted.

“Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini apps when used with a personal account,” Google stated on a support page. “These changes will begin applying to users without an AI subscription on October 9.”
Google announced that if you have a Google AI Plus subscription, you will receive an email explaining the changes and the date they take effect for your personal Google account.
Changes to Google Gemini AI plans
Under the new structure, free-tier Gemini users will be limited to the smaller Flash-Lite models. Those with AI Plus plans-priced at 399 rupees per month in India-will be able to use both Flash-Lite and the more powerful Flash models. However, AI Plus users will no longer have access to Gemini Pro models, such as Gemini 3 Pro.
If you want access to the most powerful and advanced Gemini models, you will need a Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription. The AI Pro plan is priced at 1,950 rupees per month, while the AI Ultra plan starts at 6,500 rupees per month. Both the AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will retain access to the Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro models.
Google is also preparing another change to the Gemini app this month: users will be able to choose between low, medium, and high effort levels for each available model. According to the support page, higher effort levels improve the model’s ability to complete tasks and provide more comprehensive responses, though they also consume a larger portion of the usage limit.
Currently, Gemini offers a simpler extended reasoning option for solving complex problems. The new effort levels would also bring the app closer to the controls available in Google AI Studio and Antigravity.
These changes come just days after Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, a model the company describes as its most powerful AI to date; however, Argon is currently available only to select partners as part of a limited rollout.
