Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain lead India at Commonwealth Games 2026 opening ceremony – WATCH

New Delhi: Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and led India’s contingent at the opening ceremony of the, as King Charles III officially declared the Games open in Glasgow on Wednesday.

Bearing the Indian tricolour, Mirabai and Lovlina walked into the OVO Hydro to a rousing reception before being joined by the rest of the country’s 126-member contingent during the Parade of Nations. India received one of the loudest cheers of the evening as the 11-day Commonwealth Games officially got underway in Scotland.

The opening ceremony marked the beginning of the 33rd Commonwealth Games, which have brought together more than 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. The 11-day event will run until August 2, with competitions across 10 sports at four venues, making it the smallest edition of the Games in over three decades. Six sports will also include integrated para events, reinforcing the Commonwealth Games’ commitment to inclusivity.

King Charles III, accompanied by Queen Camilla, formally declared the Games Open in his capacity as Head of the Commonwealth. The monarch read the message he had placed inside the King’s Baton during the Commonwealth Day celebrations at Buckingham Palace in March 2025 before officially inaugurating the Games.

He also met baton bearers representing Commonwealth nations before the ceremony at a reception, which was attended by Scottish First Minister John Swinney, the Duke of Edinburgh and other dignitaries.

‘Commonwealth is a unique and extraordinary family of nations’

Addressing all the athletes and officials, the King said that seeing the batons arrive in Scotland in all their colourful glory and carried by inspiring athletes reminds them again that the Commonwealth is a unique and extraordinary family of nations.

“As we gather, we celebrate the dedication and talent of every athlete and team. Your perseverance inspires us, and we eagerly anticipate your achievements in the coming days,” the King said.

“As we share our love of sport, and our planet, let us build a harmonious and durable future, for our families and each other,” he added.

Glasgow stepped in to host the Commonwealth Games after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to escalating costs. Having successfully hosted the Games in 2014, the Scottish city has once again staged the event by relying entirely on existing venues and infrastructure.
