72nd National Film Awards presented: Anant Nag Wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Mammootty, Yami Gautam bag Best Actor awards
The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony was held outside Delhi for the first time in the history of India’s National Film Awards. Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar in Narmada district hosted the event. President Droupadi Murmu presented the coveted awards during the ceremony.

The Dadasaheb Phalke National Film Awards have been presented to veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag. The veteran actor is one of India’s most renowned film performers. He has acted in over 300 films in more than five decades. He receives the highest honor in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, for his contributions to Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema. Malayalam actor Mohanlal received the previous year’s Dadasaheb Phalke National Film Award.
The 72nd National Film Awards are given to Hindi cinema for excellence in 2024. Veteran Malayalam film actor Mammootty has won the Best Actor National Film Award for the fourth time. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan also has four Best Actor National Film Awards to his name. Thus, Mammootty has tied with Amitabh Bachchan. Actor Kartik Aaryan has also received the Best Actor National Film Award for his work in Chandu Champion.
Article 370 by Aditya Suhas Jambhale won the Best Feature Film National Film Award, while Yami Gautam received the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the same film. Rajkumar Periasamy received the Best Director National Film Award for Amaran.
Sanjay Mishra received the Best Supporting Actor National Film Award for Bhakshak, while Sachana Namidass and Ropashree Varkady received the Best Supporting Actress National Film Awards for Maharaja and Mithya, respectively.
The Best Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values National Film Award was presented to Arun Matheswaran’s Captain Miller. Randeep Hooda has received the Best Debut Film of a Director National Film Award for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD has received the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment National Film Award.
Bhangaar has been awarded the Best Non-Feature Film National Film Award. Aanand L Rai received the Best Direction (Non-Feature Film) National Film Award for Statue of Unity – Ekta Ka Prateek. The Best Documentary National Film Award was presented to Ram-Nami.
One of the most anticipated events of the National Film Awards ceremony, the announcement of the Dadasaheb Phalke National Film Awards, was held in Gujarat’s Ekta Nagar. Anant Nag, the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke National Film Award, spoke about his feelings on receiving the highest honor in Indian cinema. The veteran actor stated that he used to perform in about 50 plays in 5 years when he started his career in acting. I am grateful to the producers, directors, associate directors, assistant directors, and audiences for their incredible support. The Dadasaheb Phalke National Film Award is not entirely mine. It belongs to the incredible people who have supported me and allowed me to embrace the characters I have played throughout my career.
