WhatsApp refreshes CarPlay and Android Auto with calls and voice replies

New Delhi: WhatsApp is rolling out a fresh set of features across iPad, cars, desktop and Status. The update is aimed at people who use the messaging app across several devices during the day, from a tablet at home to a car screen during travel.

The biggest change is for iPad users. People can now create a WhatsApp account directly through the iPad app. Earlier, users had to link the tablet to an account already running on a phone. The new option removes that extra step and gives the iPad a more independent role.

WhatsApp account sign-up now works on iPad

Users can register with their phone number inside the iPad app, complete the account setup and begin using WhatsApp without first linking a smartphone.

This could be useful for people who use an iPad as their main computer. It may also help families and small businesses that keep a tablet at a common desk for customer messages or daily work.

CarPlay and Android Auto get a new interface

WhatsApp has refreshed its experience on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers can now hear messages, send voice replies and place calls through the car system.

The updated screen can show call history and favourite contacts. Most controls are meant to work hands-free, which should reduce the need to touch a phone while driving. Drivers still need to stay focused on the road, since even voice conversations can be distracting.

PDFs can be opened and edited inside WhatsApp

WhatsApp Web and desktop users can now open PDF files directly inside a chat without downloading them first. The feature is supported by Adobe Acrobat.

Users can carry out basic work such as highlighting text and adding notes. It may save time for office users sharing invoices, contracts, forms or reports. Larger edits will still need a full PDF application.

Songs can be shared to WhatsApp Status

WhatsApp has also added direct music sharing from Apple Music and Spotify. A song can now be posted to Status in a few taps, allowing contacts to see what the user is listening to.

The features have started rolling out, though availability may vary by device, app version and region.
