S Jaishankar congratulated Bimal Patel, India got important post in UN Tribunal
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday met India's candidate Professor Bimal N. Patel was congratulated on being elected judge of the 'International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea' (ITLOS) in New York. He will serve on this post for the term of 2026-2035.
In a post on Twitter, the External Affairs Minister thanked the member countries of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for their support. Jaishankar wrote that congratulations Dr. Bimal Patel! Heartfelt thanks to UNCLOS member states for their support. Patel will assume his post at the tribunal on October 1 this year. This tribunal acts as a special global court, which ensures the peaceful and legal regulation of the world's oceans, their uses and resources. Earlier, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had described Patel's election as an important milestone. He said that we thank all the member countries for showing confidence in India and Prof. Patel and all the distinguished members elected to the Tribunal.
Patel's successful election will ensure India's representation at the tribunal. The election took place as part of the 36th Conference of the States Parties (Member States) of UNCLOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 15 to 19 June. The Permanent Mission of India in New York said that Professor Dr. Bimal N. was honored with his selection as a judge of the 'International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea' (ITLOS) in New York today. Congratulations Patel. His election furthers India's strong commitment to multilateralism and the 'Law of the Sea'. Congratulating Patel, the Mission thanked all Member States for their support and UNCLOS Appreciated the vision and commitment of all the candidates towards. It came into force in 1994 and currently has 172 members. The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) is an independent judicial body established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
