Ohh Aussies! Bangladesh stun Australia on Day 1 of Test

Bangladesh made a stunning return to Test cricket in Australia after 23 years, bowling out the hosts for just 198 on the opening day of the first Test at Marrara Stadium on Thursday.

In reply, Bangladesh reached 96/1 at stumps, trailing by only 102 runs.

Hasan Mahmud led Bangladesh’s bowling effort with a career-best 6/55, while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain claimed two wickets each. It was only the second time in Bangladesh’s Test history that their pace bowlers had taken all 10 wickets in an innings.

Steve Smith was the lone Australian batter to offer significant resistance, top-scoring with 71. He was eventually dismissed by Taskin Ahmed, with Mushfiqur Rahim taking the catch.

Travis Head and Jake Weatherald were the only other Australian batters to cross 20, scoring 22 and 23 respectively, as the hosts struggled against Bangladesh’s pace attack.
The visitors’ batting unit then ensured that their bowlers’ efforts did not go to waste.

Shadman Islam was dismissed for 20, but Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque steadied the innings. Tanzid scored 32, while Mominul was unbeaten on 35 at the close of play.
Bangladesh’s impressive display also provided redemption after their 54-run defeat to Australia in a warm-up match last week.
