Prime Minister Narendra Modi Highlights India’s 33 Elephant Reserves, Praised Efforts Of Forest Personnel And Others To Conserve Elephants

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is actively working on elephant conservation and has 33 Elephant Reserves, which provide significant habitats to elephants. The announcement came while addressing the audience at the event in New Delhi,

In a social media post, Modi said that reserves have a significant contribution to make in protecting elephant habitats and bolstering India’s conservation initiatives in the longer term. He also praised the efforts made by all forest personnel, scientists, veterinarians, mahouts and the local communities who played their respective roles in saving them. 

PM Modi also emphasised about the elephant reserves as they are established for the purpose of protecting important habitats and movement corridors and complement other initiatives in human-elephant conflict mitigation and elephant conservation.

The conservation of elephant corridors, where the animals have been known to roam between habitats, is also a priority in India. These are deemed to be significant measures because as humans develop closer to elephants, fragmentation of the habitat may play a role in facilitating that.

The focus on elephant reserves is particularly relevant in the context of increasing awareness and concern about wildlife conservation, and ensuring that development does not encroach on India’s natural environment.

The Prime Minister underscored the need for protected habitats for long-term conservation and survival of elephants in the country by highlighting the 33 Elephant Reserves in the country.
