120 electric buses for Mysuru under PM-e Bus Sewa scheme

Mysuru: Cultural city is set to receive 120 electric buses under the Centre’s PM-e Bus Sewa scheme, giving a major push to the city’s public transport system and promoting cleaner urban mobility.

The move comes as 35 KSRTC buses operating in the city are due to complete 15 years of service next month. The new electric buses are expected to strengthen the fleet and improve connectivity across Mysuru.

Electric buses are already operating between Mysuru and Bengaluru and have received a positive response from passengers. However, the city has not yet had dedicated electric bus services. The proposed 120 buses will operate on various city routes under a public-private partnership model.

The transport department is preparing charging infrastructure at Bannimantap, Kuvempunagar, Vijayanagar and Sathagalli depots. The department has also submitted a proposal for a dedicated electric bus depot in Mysur u, with the tender process reportedly under way.

The proposed depot will have charging points for 25 buses at a time, besides facilities for staff, security personnel and supervisory officials.Mysuru city currently has around 525 bus schedules, including services linked to the Nanjangud depot, and nearly five lakh passengers depend on government buses every day. The number of women using public transport has increased significantly following the implementation of the Shakti scheme.

Under the PM-e Bus Sewa programme, the Centre plans to introduce 10,000 electric buses across 169 cities. Karnataka is expected to receive around 4,500 buses, of which 120 have been earmarked for Mysuru. The introduction of electric buses is expected to reduce vehicular emissions, improve public transport and provide residents and tourists with a cleaner and more comfortable commuting option.
