Assam-Arunachal border tense: 11 injured in alleged firing amid land dispute

New Delhi: Tension has been escalated along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border following the alleged shooting on a group of Mising people by an unidentified person from Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam’s Dhemaji district and Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

A tense atmosphere was created this morning at 9:30 am in the Hime Bosti area of Mingmang, located along the Assam-Arunachal border in Dhemaji district in Assam.

According to reports, several people from Assam, specifically from Gogamukh Mingmang, had previously sold land to people from Arunachal in Hime Bosti.

Later on, discussions were held to reclaim that land. Today, while discussions regarding that land were ongoing once again, miscreants from Arunachal indiscriminately opened fire on the Mising community people from Assam.

The incident was followed by a confrontation between people from Assam’s Dhemaji district and Lower Siang, with the developments raising concerns in the sensitive border region.

According to preliminary reports, the alleged shooting occurred in the Lower Siang area, though the identity of the shooter and the exact circumstances leading to the incident are yet to be ascertained.

The development comes amid reports of heightened tension between members of the Mising and Galo communities in the border areas.

In a separate development linked to the reported border tension, eight people from Assam were allegedly injured in firing at Mingmang Basti amid a dispute over land and alleged encroachment.

The injured have been identified so far as Sanjay Tayung, Durgeswar Patar, Rohit Doley, Nagaraj Doley, Pame Pegu, Utpal Doley, Jaan Doley and Bigneswar Patir.

Currently, the administrations of Arunachal and Assam are continuing their investigation into the matter.

The incidents have sparked concern among residents on both sides of the inter-state boundary. Authorities are expected to investigate the alleged shooting and the subsequent clashes and take necessary steps to prevent further escalation.
