‘Narendra naam se nafrat ho gayi hai’: Indian boxer’s Pakistan story leaves PM Modi in splits
New Delhi: Indian boxer Narender Berwal left Prime Minister in splits during their recent meeting. Berwal met PM Modi at his residence in New Delhi with the rest of the Indian contingent from the recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2026. He narrated the story of a hilarious exchange between him and a Pakistani boxer from the past, which had PM Modi and others in stitches.
Berwal won a silver medal in the men’s 90kg category at the Commonwealth Games in 2026, where the Indian boxing contingent recorded its best-ever performance in the competition’s history. During his meeting with PM Modi at his residence, Berwal shared an interesting anecdote.
Berwal recalled how he was drawn against a Pakistani boxer at the World Military Games in 2015. He revealed he was told by his Army colleagues that he cannot afford to lose the match. However, it was what happened after he won the bout that became a lasting memory for Berwal.
“My first-round match was against Pakistan. I got a call from the military that you cannot lose to a Pakistani opponent. I won that fight, but we suffered cuts and went to the hospital to get stitches,” Berwal told PM Modi.
Both boxers were left with stitches after the fight and required treatment at a hospital. Berwal revealed how the Pakistani boxer noticed an unusual coincidence regarding the Indian boxer, his coach and PM Modi.
“Aapka naam Narender hai, aapke coach ka naam Narender hai, aapke Pradhan Mantri ka naam Narendra hai. Mujhe Narendra naam se nafrat ho gayi hai,” Berwal recalled the boxer telling him. PM Modi and others were left in splits as Berwal recalled the hilarious exchange at the Prime Minister’s residence on Sunday.

Narender Berwal clinched silver at Commonwealth Games 2026
Indian boxer Berwal won the silver medal in the men’s 90kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He went down 0-5 unanimous decision in the gold medal bout against England’s Damar Thomas at the CWG 2026. Berwal’s silver marked India’s 10th medal in boxing at the competition.
It capped off India’s stellar campaign in boxing at the Commonwealth Games as they recorded their best-ever performance in the history of the competition. India won seven gold and three silver medals in boxing at CWG 2026, bettering their previous best of seven medals from the 2018 edition.
India won a total of 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, including 13 gold to finish 4th in the medal standings.
