UN welcomed US-Iran Peace Deal, Europe said – this is a big opportunity for peace

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Italy, together with France, Germany and the United Kingdom, expresses heartfelt gratitude for the memorandum of understanding recently signed by the United States and Iran. She extended special thanks to all mediators, particularly Qatar and Pakistan, who made this agreement possible.

Meloni emphasized that this represents an opportunity for peace that must be seized. Italy stands ready to support the diplomatic process towards a comprehensive agreement, she stated, while affirming that Iran cannot acquire nuclear weapons and that freedom of navigation must be guaranteed.

Italy is prepared to contribute to an international naval presence with the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, alongside other partners and subject to the necessary parliamentary approval, according to the Prime Minister.

Details of the US-Iran Agreement

The United States and Iran have agreed to a preliminary peace agreement in the form of a memorandum of understanding. Pakistan brokered the agreement, which includes an immediate ceasefire and is set to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.

The agreement plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US blockade on Iranian ports. Both nations will begin 60 days of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief. Iran has agreed to halt nuclear activities until a final agreement is reached, while both sides have discussed possible sanctions relief.

The framework also aims to halt military operations in Lebanon, although key disputes over regional security and Iran’s nuclear future remain unresolved.

UN Welcomes the Deal

UN human rights chief Volker Turk welcomed the US-Iran peace agreement, calling it an important step towards ending conflict and restoring stability in the region. He urged all parties to exercise “maximum restraint” and sincerely implement the agreement.

Turk expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Lebanon and called for an immediate halt to the fighting. He also demanded Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory and called for an investigation into alleged violations of international law by all parties.

Europe has similarly welcomed the US-Iran peace deal, describing it as a significant opportunity for peace in the region.
