West Indies suffer major blow, miss direct qualification for ODI World Cup 2027

New Delhi: Two-time champions have missed out on direct entry to the , which means that the Men in Maroon will once again have to play the qualifiers to reach the 50-over showpiece. Their fate was sealed after Afghanistan beat Ireland by 92 runs in the rain-curtailed second ODI match at Bready Cricket Club on Friday.

The result also guaranteed Afghanistan a direct spot at the 2027 World Cup, while West Indies failed to break into the direct qualification spots before the September 30, 2026 cut-off date. The ODI World Cup 2027 will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November, with matches to be played across 12 venues.

Third straight World Cup without direct qualification for West Indies

West Indies have also failed to secure a direct qualification spot for the 2019 and 2023 editions. They successfully advanced from the qualifiers in 2019, but suffered a massive setback four years later when they were knocked out of the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and missed the main tournament in India.

They will now have to play the qualifiers if they are to feature in the 2027 edition. The ODI World Cup’s co-hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe, have already qualified. The remaining seven direct places will be determined by the ICC ODI rankings, with the rankings deadline set for September 30, 2026.

West Indies are currently placed in the 10th spot in the ODI rankings, behind Afghanistan (8th) and Bangladesh (9th). This means that the Windies cannot move into the top-nine spots before the deadline. West Indies will face India in a three-match ODI series before the cut-off in September and October.

However, even winning both games will not be enough to help them secure a direct spot in the 2027 event. Ireland have also failed to secure direct qualification for the tournament.
