Maharashtra milk prices to rise by Rs 2 per litre from August 11

New Delhi: Milk is set to get costlier in Maharashtra from August 11, with the price of both cow and buffalo milk being increased by Rs 2 per litre.

The decision was taken by the Milk Producers and Processors Welfare Association at a meeting attended by representatives of major cooperative and private dairies. The association said the hike was necessary amid rising costs across the dairy supply chain.

Why is milk becoming more expensive in Maharashtra?

Dairy producers have pointed to a sharp increase in transportation and packaging costs. According to the association, diesel prices have risen by around Rs 10 per litre, increasing the cost of transporting milk from producers to processing and distribution centres.

Packaging costs have also gone up by around 30 per cent. At the same time, the procurement price of milk has increased, with dairies expecting further pressure on their input costs. These factors were reportedly behind the move by the association to approve a Rs 2-per-litre increase in milk prices from Tuesday, August 11.

Milk price hike could push up cost of dairy products

The impact of the increase could extend beyond packets of milk. The association has indicated that prices of other dairy products could also rise by up to 10 per cent as producers and processors attempt to absorb higher input and operating costs.

The latest increase adds to a broader trend of milk prices being revised across India. Major dairy brands have also raised prices in recent months, citing higher procurement, production and distribution costs.

For consumers in Maharashtra, the immediate impact will be a Rs 2 increase for every litre of cow or buffalo milk purchased from August 11. The hike could also add to household expenses for products such as curd, paneer, ghee and other milk-based items if dairies pass on their increased costs.
