BESCOM clears unused electrical equipment from Bengaluru footpaths

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has intensified its participation in the Clean Up Bengaluru campaign by removing unused and defunct electrical infrastructure obstructing pedestrian pathways across the city.

During the drive conducted between August 1 and 8, BESCOM officials modified 356 electricity poles, 10 transformer centres, 199 other infrastructure installations and 323 GS operating rods. The teams also cleaned 1,730 DTC yards, 411 RMU yards and 383 spun-pole and DP yards.

In addition, 101 feeder pillar boxes underwent rewiring and yard-cleaning works, while 39 poles were subjected to rewiring and related maintenance.

The campaign, launched as part of the month-long Clean Up Bengaluru initiative announced by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, saw BESCOM personnel carry out work across Yelahanka, Sahakara Nagar, Dasarahalli, Hebbal, MSR Nagar, HBR Layout, KR Puram, Channasandra, Whitefield, Bellandur, HSR Layout, JP Nagar and Shivajinagar.

BESCOM Managing Director Dr N. Shivashankar said the utility was working with the Greater Bengaluru Authority to make pedestrian movement safer.

“We are shifting unused electrical equipment that obstructs pedestrian movement to safer locations under the guidance of our technical teams. We are also removing waste accumulated around electrical installations,” he said.

Energy Minister K.J. George said BESCOM’s focus on pedestrian safety would continue through the month, with efforts aimed at creating cleaner and safer footpaths across Bengaluru.
