New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam’s divorce hearing took place on Monday (June 15), but the session was concluded without any major developments or decisions.
Divorce hearing deferred
The Chengalpattu Mahila Court adjourned the proceedings and scheduled the next hearing on August 7. According to an India Today report, the hearing began at 10:30 am, with both Vijay and Sangeetha in attendance as directed by the court.
However, the session was concluded without any resolutions or decisions, despite their presence. Sangeetha had filed the divorce petition after 27 years of marriage with Vijay.
The matter was initially scheduled for a hearing on April 20. But, both Vijay and Sangeetha skipped the hearing, and they were represented by their lawyers. Noting their absence, the family court ordered both individuals to attend the next hearing on June 15.
However, lawyers from both sides requested virtual appearances, citing logistics and security concerns. But the court rejected it and ordered their physical appearance in court.
What’s in the divorce petition?
The divorce petition accused Vijay of adultery and cruelty under the Special Marriage Act of 1954. Sangeetha claimed that she found out in April 2021 that Vijay is in a relationship with an actress. Though the petition doesn’t name anyone, Vijay is widely linked with the actress Trisha Krishnan.
The petition further alleged that despite Vijay’s promises to end the affair, he allegedly continued the relationship. Sangeetha further claimed that he travels and appears at public events with the actress and the actress too regularly posts photos of their outings on social media without objection from Vijay, which causes public humiliation and emotional distress to her and their children.
It further details a severe marriage breakdown, citing verbal disdain and emotional withdrawal from Vijay. She also claimed that the actor made the home environment so hostile that she was isolated and forced to live a separate life while he was focus on his political and public career.
The petition also alleged financial misconduct, claiming that the actor placed strict financial limits on her, restricted her movements and cut off her access to regular household facilities.
Sangeetha also claimed that she tried to fix the marriage and reconcile with him through legal notices and personal talks between August 2024 and February 2025. Their final meeting took place on November 9, 2025 but ended with no results. According to her, their marriage is broken beyond repair and only exists on paper.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s marriage
The duo first registered their marriage in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a grand wedding ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999.
Sangeetha, a UK-Based Sri Lankan Tamil, was a fan of Vijay after watching his film Poove Unakkaga who travelled to Chennai to meet him. They also dated before tying the knot. They have two children together, a son named Jason Sanjay and a daughter named Divya Sasha.
